If grading in the classroom can be considered the economy of the classroom, then each grade given can be considered the currency. Grading in this class is comprised of four separate and distinct categories that assess different approaches to understanding. Attention to all of these grading categories is essential for the economically successful student. Each student receives a separate grade in each category which allows success in one area to be protected mathematically from other areas that may require more of a struggle.
These categories are as follows:

Individual Examination Performance (40%):
This is an area of assessment that most students are very familiar with. Here scores of individually worked student Exams, Quizzes and Quick Challenges are tallied.

Individual Project Performance (30%):
This category is the most varied. Here student scores from individually worked homework, long term projects and maintenance tasks are tallied.

Group Project Performance (30%):
This category assesses student work done in groups, often in the lab. Studies have shown that interchange within a group and the ability of students to work together towards a common task are vitally important for education in science. Students will be required to work efficiently and safely in the lab. This portion of the grade takes a good deal of work and assesses student ability to find real understanding of the nature of science.
